Summer Safety Tips for a Great Summer

By Ashley Paskill on June 17, 2018

Summer is a time for fun in the sun and relaxing outdoors. Many enjoy swimming, going to the beach, and hiking in the woods. However, these activities can lead to harmful health effects if you are not careful. To make sure you have the best summer imaginable, follow these tips to stay safe and healthy.

1. Stay hydrated

With the summer heat, it is easy to get dehydrated if you are doing heavy outdoor activities. It is important to stay hydrated to make sure you do not get overheated. Make sure you have plenty of bottled water if you are outside. Also, sports drinks like Gatorade or Powerade are great ways to restore electrolytes your body loses as you sweat. Know the symptoms of being dehydrated and of heat stroke. Check in on elderly neighbors to make sure they are keeping cool.

2. Apply sunscreen often

While it may be tempting to work on your tan by not wearing sunscreen, this often leads to painful sunburn that can lead to scars and skin cancer. The sun’s UV rays are harmful, even if it is cloudy out. Sunscreen is important in the summer, especially if you plan on being around water as water reflects the sun’s rays. Always apply sunscreen if you plan on being on outdoors for long periods of time. Reapply every few hours to ensure coverage.

3. Know what to wear and look for when you go hiking

If you plan on going on a hike, flip-flops will not do the job, as you will likely run into various plants and animals. For hiking, wear sturdy shoes to make sure your feet are secure to avoid sprains and breaks from twisting your ankle. Always check to make sure you do not have any ticks on you, and know the signs of Lyme disease.  Beware of poison ivy and other harmful plants, and wear long pants and bug spray to keep yourself protected.

4. If you work outside, take breaks

If your job requires you to be outside, like in landscaping or construction, take plenty of breaks to stay cool and keep hydrated. Know your body. You know better than anyone else what you are capable of doing and the signs that you are exhausted. Follow the signs of your body and take rests if you feel like you need to. Keep cold water and sports drinks available to stay hydrated. It may be tempting to keep working if you do not feel well, but it is important to take care of yourself.
